The Australian Government has committed AusLink funding to Main Roads WA to upgrade sections of the Great Northern Highway between Halls Creek and Kununurra. Team Savannah (a joint venture between BGC Contracting Pty. Ltd. and Laing O'Rouke Australia Construction Pty. Ltd. and with Maunsell Australia Pty. Ltd. as designer) has commenced work on the project.
Work will be suspended for the 2008/09 wet season. Team Savannah will ensure that a fully sealed road is left for traffc over this period.
Road users are urged to obey the reduced speed limits and all signs and show courtesy whilst moving through the work sites.

Bow River Section
- 18km of road reconstruction, commencing 31km north of Warmun
- Wider seal with improved alignment
- New higher capacity culverts
- 1km detour 5km south of Lissadell Rd (Argyle Access) from 20 July - September 2008
- Construction will commence in July 2008, with completion in July 2009.
Telegraph Creek
- 49m three span, two lane bridge to replace the existing flood crossing.
- The bridge will be constructed on a new road alignment and traffic will continue on the existing road during construction
- Construction commences in July 2008 and is due for completion in February 2009
Big Mabel Creek
- New 49m three span, two lane bridge to replace the existing single lane structure.
- 500m detour will be in place from 3 July – December 2008
- Construction commences July 2008, with completion by January 2009.
Fletchers Creek
- 60m three span, two lane bridge to replace the existing flood crossing.
- The bridge will be constructed on a new alignment and traffic will continue on the existing road during construction
- Construction commences in July 2008 and is due for completion in May 2009
